# Moritz Roth

**Moritz Roth** (25 December 1839, in [Basel](/source/Basel) – 4 November 1914, in [Gottlieben](/source/Gottlieben) am Untersee) was a [Swiss](/source/Switzerland) [pathologist](/source/Pathologist) remembered for describing [Roth's spots](/source/Roth's_spots). He studied medicine at [Würzburg](/source/W%C3%BCrzburg), [Göttingen](/source/G%C3%B6ttingen), [Berlin](/source/Berlin) and Basel, where he received his doctorate in 1864. He became [dozent](/source/Docent) at Basel in 1866 and moved to [Greifswald](/source/Greifswald) in 1868 before returning to the [University of Basel](/source/University_of_Basel) as professor of pathology in 1872. He retired in 1898, and was succeeded by [Eduard Kaufmann](/source/Eduard_Kaufmann). His 1892 book on [Andreas Vesalius](/source/Andreas_Vesalius) remains a standard reference text.[1][2][3]
