== Life ==
Seubert was the son of a medical officer of health. He first attended the ''Lyzeum'' in Karlsruhe and already at that time had contact with the botanist, [Alexander Braun](/source/Alexander_Braun), who interested him in this subject. As of 1836, he studied medicine at the [University of Heidelberg](/source/University_of_Heidelberg) and then in 1837, he studied natural science at the [University of Bonn](/source/University_of_Bonn). His teachers in [Bonn](/source/Bonn) were [Georg August Goldfuss](/source/Georg_August_Goldfuss), [Ludolph Christian Treviranus](/source/Ludolph_Christian_Treviranus) and [Johann Jakob Nöggerath](/source/Johann_Jakob_N%C3%B6ggerath). After receiving his [PhD](/source/PhD) in Bonn, he moved to the [University of Berlin](/source/University_of_Berlin), where he qualified as a professor. In 1846, he was offered a chair as professor for [botany](/source/botany) and [zoology](/source/zoology) at the [University of Karlsruhe](/source/University_of_Karlsruhe) as the successor to [Alexander Braun](/source/Alexander_Braun). At the same time, he succeeded Braun as the head of the ''Großherzoglichen Naturalienkabinetts'' (Grand Ducal Natural History Specimen Cabinet) and of the Karlsruhe Botanical Gardens. In addition, he was the librarian of the ''Großherzoglichen Hof- und Landesbibliothek'' (Grand Ducal Court and State Library).<ref name=AD/>

Besides teaching and administration, Seubert also published several works. His ''Flora azorica'', in which he critically appraised the [herbarium](/source/herbarium)s of [Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter](/source/Christian_Ferdinand_Friedrich_Hochstetter) and his son, Karl Hochstetter, appeared in 1844. He also worked on a series of plant families in ''[Flora Brasiliensis](/source/Flora_Brasiliensis)'', published by [Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius](/source/Carl_Friedrich_Philipp_von_Martius), among which were the [Alismataceae](/source/Alismataceae), [Amaryllidaceae](/source/Amaryllidaceae), [Butomaceae](/source/Butomaceae) and [Liliaceae](/source/Liliaceae). In addition, he wrote a ''Lehrbuch der gesamten Pflanzenkunde'' (Textbook of All of Botany), which appeared in five editions. In 1836, his ''Exkursionsflora für das Großherzogthum Baden'' (Study Trip Flora for the [Grand Duchy of Baden](/source/Grand_Duchy_of_Baden)) appeared and another one for southwestern Germany was published  in 1869.<ref name=AD/>
