Zuill was born at [Falkirk](/source/Falkirk) in April 1937. He was educated at [Merchiston Castle School](/source/Merchiston_Castle_School),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.merchiston.co.uk/sport/internationalists|title=Internationalists|publisher=www.merchiston.co.uk|accessdate=2022-06-14}}</ref> before matriculating to the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh) where he studied to become an accountant. A [club cricket](/source/club_cricket)er for Stenhousemuir Cricket Club, Zuill made his debut in [first-class cricket](/source/first-class_cricket) for [Scotland](/source/Scotland_cricket_team) against [Warwickshire](/source/Warwickshire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Edgbaston](/source/Edgbaston_Cricket_Ground) in 1962.
