# Moranwali

**Moranwali** is a village near [Banga, Punjab](/source/Banga,_India), India but falls in Tehsil [Garhshankar](/source/Garhshankar) ([Hoshiarpur](/source/Hoshiarpur)), [Hoshiarpur district](/source/Hoshiarpur_district), in Punjab state.[1]

## Demographics

According to the 2001 Census,[2] Moranwali has a population of 3,097 people. Neighbouring villages include Possi, Aema Mughlan, [Ladhana Ucha](/source/Ladhana_Ucha) and [Pathlawa](/source/Pathlawa).

## History

According to local legend,[3] Moranwali was built by the [Rai](/source/Rai_(Punjabi_surname)) [Jats](/source/Jats) of [Thalla](/source/Thalla), [Jalandhar](/source/Jalandhar).

The [Rai](/source/Rai_(Punjabi_surname)) moved to [Khusropur](/source/Khusropur), [Jalandhar](/source/Jalandhar) as [Maharaja Ranjit Singh](/source/Ranjit_Singh) rewarded the Rai by giving land in recognition of their contribution in annexing [Jalandhar](/source/Jalandhar) to his kingdom in 1811.

During the 1840s, the [British](/source/United_Kingdom) built a [cantonment](/source/Cantonment) and ordered many Rai to leave [Khusropur](/source/Khusropur) and construct a new village, Moranwali.

Moranwali is so named as the land had many [peacocks](/source/Peacock). The village was completed in 1850 and other Jat clans, such as the [Gills](/source/Gills), Sandhus and the [Hayers](/source/Hayer) joined the Rai and Shergills to live in the village.

## Around Moranwali

The village is famous for its connection to Shaheed [Bhagat Singh](/source/Bhagat_Singh) as his mother's family hails from Moranwali. Moranwali is also known for the shrine of Baba Bhagtu Ji.
