The house which sits within {{convert|30|acre}} of land and it was built in about 1740. The lyricist [Jean Elliot](/source/Jean_Elliot) who wrote words to the lament [Flowers of the Forest](/source/Flowers_of_the_Forest), died at Monteviot, her brother's house, on 29 March 1805.<ref>{{Cite ODNB|url=https://www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-8665|title=Elliot, Jean [Jane] (1727–1805), poet|year=2004|language=en|doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/8665|access-date=2020-03-25}}</ref> Her brother Admiral [John Eliot](/source/John_Elliot_(Royal_Navy_officer)) died here in 1808 after a distinguished career as Governor of [Newfoundland](/source/Newfoundland) and rose to be an [Admiral of the White](/source/Admiral_of_the_White). Further building work took place in 1830<ref name=cast/> just before [John Kerr, 7th Marquess of Lothian](/source/John_Kerr%2C_7th_Marquess_of_Lothian) married [Lady Cecil Chetwynd Chetwynd-Talbot](/source/Cecil_Kerr_(noblewoman)). In 1950 the [12th Marquess](/source/Peter_Kerr%2C_12th_Marquess_of_Lothian) and his wife [Tony](/source/Antonella_Kerr%2C_Marchioness_of_Lothian) moved from [Melbourne Hall](/source/Melbourne_Hall) to the Scottish Borders in 1950 where they oversaw the restoration of Monteviot House. In the late 20th century the 12th Marquess repurchased and restored the old family seat of [Ferniehirst Castle](/source/Ferniehirst_Castle).
