'''Montemassi''' is a village in [Tuscany](/source/Tuscany), central Italy, administratively part of the ''[comune](/source/comune)'' of [Roccastrada](/source/Roccastrada), in the [province of Grosseto](/source/province_of_Grosseto). It is located on a hill about {{convert|140|m|abbr=on}} above sea level.

The village originated as a fortified village of the [Aldobrandeschi](/source/Aldobrandeschi) family. The [Republic of Siena](/source/Republic_of_Siena) conquered it in the mid-13th century, but in the following century it was held by the Pannocchieschi and the Cappucciani of [Sticciano](/source/Sticciano) families. In 1328 it was conquered by the condottiero [Guidoriccio da Fogliano](/source/Guidoriccio_da_Fogliano), fighting for Siena; the event is depicted in a [famous fresco](/source/Guidoriccio_da_Fogliano_at_the_siege_of_Montemassi) in the [Palazzo Pubblico](/source/Palazzo_Pubblico) of [Siena](/source/Siena).

In the mid-16th century it became part of the [Grand Duchy of Tuscany](/source/Grand_Duchy_of_Tuscany), following its history thenceforth.

It features a large polygonal [rocca](/source/Rocca_(architecture)) and a line of walls.
