**Monte Patria** is a [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Chile) and one of four [communes](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in the [Limarí Province](/source/Limar%C3%AD_Province) of [Chile](/source/Chile)'s north-central [Coquimbo Region](/source/Coquimbo_Region).

## Administration

As a commune, Monte Patria is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a Communal Council ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Consejo Comunal*), headed by a directly elected [alcalde](/source/Alcalde). As of 2010, the alcalde is [Juan Carlos Castillo](/source/Juan_Carlos_Castillo).

Monte Patria belongs to the 9th [electoral district](/source/Electoral_division_of_Chile) and the 4th Senate District (Coquimbo Region). It is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) of the [National Congress](/source/National_Congress_of_Chile) by the Members Adriana Muñoz ([PPD](/source/Party_for_Democracy_(Chile))) and [Luis Lemus](/source/Luis_Lemus) ([PRI](/source/Regionalist_Party_of_the_Independents)). Currently, Coquimbo is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by [Jorge Pizarro](/source/Jorge_Pizarro) ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democrat_Party)) and [Evelyn Matthei](/source/Evelyn_Matthei) ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democrat_Union)).

Monte Patria spans an area of 4,366.3 km (2,713 mi).[2]

## Demographics

According to data from the 2002 Census of Population and Housing, the Monte Patria commune had 30,276 inhabitants; of these, 13,340 (44.1%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 16,936 (55.9%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). Thus, the Monte Patria population represents 5.1% of regional population and 19.2% of the provincial population. At that time, there were 15,351 men and 14,925 women residing in the commune.[2]
