'''Monte Cauriol''' is a [mountain](/source/mountain) of [Trentino](/source/Trentino), [Italy](/source/Italy), with an elevation of {{convert|2494|m|ft|0}}. Part of the [Lagorai](/source/Lagorai) range, it is located in the eastern part of the [Province of Trento](/source/Province_of_Trento), between the [Val di Fiemme](/source/Val_di_Fiemme) and the Val Vanoi.<ref name="auto2">{{Cite web|url=https://www.vienormali.it/montagna/cima_scheda.asp?cod=174|title=Monte Cauriol via normale - Relazione scalata Monte Cauriol su VieNormali.it (08/08/2005 - Matteo F. )|website=Vienormali.it}}</ref><ref name="auto1">{{Cite web|url=https://girovagandointrentino.it/escursioni/monte-cauriol-m-2495/|title=Girovagando | Monte Cauriol M 2495|date=25 February 2021}}</ref><ref name="auto">{{Cite web|url=https://www.trentinograndeguerra.it/context.jsp?area=101&ID_LINK=250&id_context=548|title=Trentino Grande Guerra - Monte Cauriol|website=www.trentinograndeguerra.it}}</ref>

The mountain was the theatre of bitter fighting during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War); initially held by the [Austro-Hungarian](/source/Austro-Hungarian)s, after three unsuccessful Italian assaults it was finally taken by the [Alpini](/source/Alpini) on 27 August 1916. It returned to Austro-Hungarian hands in late October 1917, when the Italians were forced to evacuate the entire region to avoid encirclement in the wake of the [battle of Caporetto](/source/battle_of_Caporetto). It is estimated that 10,000 soldiers were killed on Monte Cauriol during the war, many of them by the bitter cold and [avalanche](/source/avalanche)s rather than by enemy action. ''Monte Cauriol'' is also the title of one of the traditional [Alpini songs](/source/Alpini_songs).<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.storiaememoriadibologna.it/archivio/eventi/la-guerra-sul-lagorai-il-cauriol-ostia-che-brutta-bestia|title=La guerra sul Lagorai. [Hiking path](/source/Hiking_path)s from Rifugio Refavaie (near [Caoria](/source/Caoria)) and Rifugio Cauriol (near [Ziano di Fiemme](/source/Ziano_di_Fiemme)) lead to the peak, where a [summit cross](/source/summit_cross) and plaques commemorating the fallen in World War I can be found.
