{{Short description|Oxide containing only one atom of oxygen}}
{{ About|chemistry|the rapper|Monoxide Child}}thumb|A model of the carbon monoxide molecule.A '''monoxide''' is any [oxide](/source/oxide) containing only one [atom](/source/atom) of [oxygen](/source/oxygen). A well known monoxide is [carbon monoxide](/source/carbon_monoxide); see [carbon monoxide poisoning](/source/carbon_monoxide_poisoning).

The prefix mono (Greek for "one") is used in [chemical nomenclature](/source/chemical_nomenclature).<ref>{{Cite book|title=Foundations of College Chemistry, 13th Edition|publisher=Wiley|year=2010|isbn=978-0470460610|pages=110}}</ref> In proper nomenclature, the prefix is not always used in compounds with one oxygen atom.<ref>{{Cite book|title=Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, IUPAC Recommendations 2005|year=2005 |isbn=0-85404-438-8|pages=69, 70}}</ref> Generally, when the oxygen is bonded to a [nonmetal](/source/Nonmetal_(chemistry)), the prefix mono is used. However, when the oxygen atom bonds to a [metal](/source/metal), the prefix is dropped. For instance, in the compound K2O, [potassium](/source/potassium) (K) is a metal and therefore its proper name is [potassium oxide](/source/potassium_oxide), rather than potassium monoxide.

Among monoxides, carbon monoxide and dihydrogen monoxide ([water](/source/water)) are both neutral, [germanium(II) oxide](/source/Germanium_monoxide) is distinctly acidic, and both [tin(II) oxide](/source/tin(II)_oxide) and [lead(II) oxide](/source/lead(II)_oxide) are [amphoteric](/source/Amphoterism). [aluminiumdioxide](/source/aluminiumdioxide)
