Not to be confused with [Muniz (disambiguation)](/source/Muniz_(disambiguation)).

**Moniz** is a [surname](/source/Surname) in the [Portuguese language](/source/Portuguese_language), namely in [Portugal](/source/Portugal) and [Brazil](/source/Brazil). It is believed to derive from a [Gothic](/source/Goths),[1][2] or [Gascon](/source/Gascony)[3] given name Munnius, Monio, Munino, Monnio, and Munnio used in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. It is uncertain whether the [Galician](/source/Galician_people) and [Asturian](/source/Asturias) 'Muñiz' or 'Muniz' surnames are in any way related with Moniz. The Portuguese variants of the medieval name were [Munio](/source/Munio), [Monio](/source/Monio) and [Moninho](/source/Moninho),[4] making Moniz (son of Moninho or Munio)[5][6] a patronymic surname.
