**Moncalvo** is a village and *[comune](/source/Comune)* in the [Province of Asti](/source/Province_of_Asti) in the [Italian](/source/Italy) region [Piedmont](/source/Piedmont), located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) east of [Turin](/source/Turin) and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) northeast of [Asti](/source/Asti) on the national road SS 547 which links Asti to [Casale Monferrato](/source/Casale_Monferrato) and [Vercelli](/source/Vercelli). Historically it was part of the state of [Montferrat](/source/Montferrat) and was of particular importance during the early years of the [Paleologi](/source/Paleologi) period of the marquisate. Its best-known inhabitants were the [Baroque painter](/source/Baroque_painting) [Guglielmo Caccia](/source/Guglielmo_Caccia) and ‘[La Bella Rosin](/source/La_Bella_Rosin)’, King [Victor Emmanuel II](/source/Victor_Emmanuel_II)’s favourite mistress and eventually wife.

Moncalvo borders the following municipalities: [Alfiano Natta](/source/Alfiano_Natta), [Castelletto Merli](/source/Castelletto_Merli), [Cereseto](/source/Cereseto), [Grana](/source/Grana_(AT)), [Grazzano Badoglio](/source/Grazzano_Badoglio), [Ottiglio](/source/Ottiglio), [Penango](/source/Penango), and [Ponzano Monferrato](/source/Ponzano_Monferrato).

## History

The fondation dates back to [Romans](/source/Roman_Empire), in [Middle Age](/source/Middle_Age) the village was under the [Asti](/source/Asti) bishopric, until it became part of [March of Montferrat](/source/March_of_Montferrat), of which it became his capital city. In 1691, the village was plunded by [Prince Eugene of Savoy](/source/Prince_Eugene_of_Savoy)'s troops. In 1704, the village was annexed to [Savoy House](/source/Savoy_House) domains.[3]

### Jewish community

Since [XVI century](/source/XVI_century), in Moncalvo has been settled an important [Jewish](/source/Jewish) community: in 1731, Jewish people were 176 out of about 1700 total inhabitants.

Their [Ghetto](/source/Ghetto) had the particularity of being in the city center (usually ghettos were far away from city center and main churches), and moreover, the Jewish synagogue faces the center place of Moncalvo.

The main document concerning Jewish Moncalveses is *La Gran Battaja dj'Abrei d'Moncalv* (The Big Battle of Moncalvese Jews), that is a Piedmontese ballad, written in [Judaeo-Piedmontese](/source/Judaeo-Piedmontese) by a non-Jew local writer, that is underlining how much Jewish Moncalveses were integrated in the Moncalvo society.[4]

The Moncalvese Jewish community has been extinguished after [WW2](/source/WW2), but his demographic decline persisted since centuries before.
