'''Molybdite''' is the naturally occurring mineral form of [molybdenum trioxide](/source/molybdenum_trioxide) MoO3. It occurs as yellow to greenish needles and crystallizes in the [orthorhombic](/source/orthorhombic) [crystal system](/source/crystal_system).

== Discovery and occurrence ==
Molybdite was first described in 1854 for and occurrence in quartz veins in the [Knöttel](/source/Kn%C3%B6ttel) area of [Krupka](/source/Krupka), [Ore Mountains](/source/Ore_Mountains), [Bohemia](/source/Bohemia) (today in the [Ústí nad Labem Region](/source/%C3%9Ast%C3%AD_nad_Labem_Region) of the Czech Republic.<ref name=Mindat/> It occurs in vein cavities and as coatings in [molybdenite](/source/molybdenite) ore veins and [quartz](/source/quartz) [topaz](/source/topaz) [greisen](/source/greisen)s. Associated minerals include molybdenite, [betpakdalite](/source/betpakdalite) and quartz.<ref name=HBM/> The similar mineral [ferrimolybdite](/source/ferrimolybdite) is often misidentified as molybdite.<ref name=HBM/>
