# Mohawk, Michigan

**Mohawk** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) (CDP) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Michigan](/source/Michigan).[1] As of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), Mohawk had a population of 388.[2] Located in [Keweenaw County](/source/Keweenaw_County,_Michigan), it is within [Allouez Township](/source/Allouez_Township,_Michigan). As an unincorporated community, Mohawk has no legally defined boundaries but does have its own post office with the 49950 ZIP Code.[3] The ZIP includes most of mainland Keweenaw County and also uses the [Eagle Harbor](/source/Eagle_Harbor,_Michigan) and [Eagle River](/source/Eagle_River,_Michigan) designations.[4]

Mohawk is centered along [U.S. Highway 41](/source/U.S._Route_41_in_Michigan) just north of the village of [Ahmeek](/source/Ahmeek,_Michigan) in the [Keweenaw Peninsula](/source/Keweenaw_Peninsula). It is the site of the [Mohawk Mining Company](/source/Mohawk_Mining_Company), which conducted copper mining in the early 1900s.[5] [Mohawkite](/source/Mohawkite) is a rare mineral that is believed to be found only in the Mohawk Mine.[6]

## Demographics

According to the [2020 U.S. census](/source/2020_United_States_census), Mohawk had a population of 388.[7] In 2020, more than 90% of its population was [non-Hispanic white](/source/Non-Hispanic_whites).

Culturally, the majority of its population has [English](/source/English_Americans) ancestry (17.2%), though [German](/source/German_Americans) (13.9%) and [Irish](/source/Irish_Americans) (11%) were the second and third-largest ancestries.[8] Through the 2021 American Community Survey, the median age of its population was 38.4.[9]

As of 2021's census estimates, the community had a median household income of $47,188 and 23.8% of the population lived at or below the poverty line.[10]
