He is an [Indian Administrative Service](/source/Indian_Administrative_Service) officer of the 1968 batch.[1] He retired as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh in 2003. He also served as a Member of [National Disaster Management Authority](/source/National_Disaster_Management_Authority_(India)).[2] ## Early life He was born in [Chennai](/source/Chennai), [Tamil Nadu](/source/Tamil_Nadu), in a [Telugu](/source/Telugu_language) Brahmin family to the High Court judge Mr. Bhimsankaram Kanda and Mrs. Papayamma, a prominent social reformer. He was the youngest child of his parents, who had ten children in total. He did his schooling from [All Saints High School, Hyderabad](/source/All_Saints_High_School,_Hyderabad) and his Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics from [Nizam College](/source/Nizam_College), [Osmania University](/source/Osmania_University). He was awarded Ph.D in Mathematics by [Osmania University](/source/Osmania_University) for his thesis. His nephew was the former [Communist Party of India (Marxist)](/source/Communist_Party_of_India_(Marxist)) General Secretary, [Sitaram Yechury](/source/Sitaram_Yechury), who died on 12 September 2024. He has acted in a few Telugu films as a [child actor](/source/Child_actor) with the screen name "Master Mohan."[3] They include *[Pelli Chesi Choodu](/source/Pelli_Chesi_Choodu)* a comedy film of 1952 directed by [L. V. Prasad](/source/L._V._Prasad). He acted in the song drama *Amma Noppule Ammamma Noppule*. ## Career Mohan Kanda started his career with State Bank of India as an Probationary Officer. After becoming an IAS Officer he began working with the [Government of Andhra Pradesh](/source/Government_of_Andhra_Pradesh). He was also Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India and served as Member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).[4] He worked as a Secretary in the Union Ministry of Agriculture before working as Chief Secretary in Chandrababu Naidu's government and later with [Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy](/source/Y.S.Rajasekhara_Reddy) government. He is a Member of the Steering Committee on Agriculture and Allied Sectors for the formulation of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012–17) for Planning Commission.[5][6] He was made head of a committee that would look into the problems faced by the Coastal Andhra riots in declaring a Crop Holiday.[7] ## Personal life Mohan Kanda is married to Usha.[8] ## References 1.
