**Mohammed Chahim** (born 18 April 1985) is a Moroccan-born Dutch politician of the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(Netherlands)) (PvdA) who has served as a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament) (MEP) since [2019](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election_in_the_Netherlands).[1]

He is the EUs [Socialists & Democrats](/source/Progressive_Alliance_of_Socialists_and_Democrats) vice president and rapporteur for the carbon border adjustment mechanism.[2]

## Education and career

Chahim was born in [Fez, Morocco](/source/Fez%2C_Morocco), and he grew up in the Dutch cities of [Weert](/source/Weert) and [Helmond](/source/Helmond). He graduated with a [PhD](/source/PhD) in [econometrics](/source/Econometrics) from [Tilburg University](/source/Tilburg_University) in 2013, and he subsequently researched sustainability and the [circular economy](/source/Circular_economy) at the [Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research](/source/Netherlands_Organisation_for_Applied_Scientific_Research) (TNO) in [Delft](/source/Delft).[4]

## Political career

Chahim was elected to the [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council_(Netherlands)) of [Helmond](/source/Helmond) in [2006](/source/2006_Dutch_municipal_elections) for the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(Netherlands)). He was reelected in [2010](/source/2010_Dutch_municipal_elections), [2014](/source/2014_Dutch_municipal_elections) and [2018](/source/2018_Dutch_municipal_elections). In 2014, he became party group leader in the council, a position he held until 2019, when he resigned his seat following his election to the [European Parliament](/source/European_Parliament).
