# Modesto Transportation Center

The **Modesto Transportation Center** is a bus terminal and former train station located in downtown [Modesto, California](/source/Modesto,_California).

## History

The [Central Pacific Railroad](/source/Central_Pacific_Railroad) was built to Modesto with service beginning on November 8, 1870.[1] The railroad taken over by the [Southern Pacific Railroad](/source/Southern_Pacific_Railroad) in 1884, who built a new [Mission Revival](/source/Mission_Revival_Style_architecture)-style station in 1915. It was used until 1971, when [Amtrak](/source/Amtrak) took over intercity passenger service.[2][3]

When Amtrak restored service to Modesto with the *[San Joaquin](/source/Gold_Runner)* in 1974, the former [Santa Fe](/source/Santa_Fe_Railroad) station in Riverbank was used instead. (It was replaced with the modern [Modesto station](/source/Modesto_station) in 1999.[2]) The depot was restored in 1993 as a bus terminal.[3]

Rail service is expected to be restored in 2026 as part of the [Altamont Corridor Express](/source/Altamont_Corridor_Express) [Merced Extension project](/source/Valley_Rail_(ACE)) to Merced via Ceres.[4][5][6] The station building is undergoing renovations to expand the passenger waiting area at a cost of $5.23 million.[7]
