The '''Modern Left''' ({{langx|fr|La Gauche moderne}}, LGM), is a [centrist](/source/centrism) [political party in France](/source/list_of_political_parties_in_France) founded in 2007.

The party was founded following the nomination of the former [Socialist Party](/source/Socialist_Party_(France)) (PS) Senator and Mayor of [Mulhouse](/source/Mulhouse), [Jean-Marie Bockel](/source/Jean-Marie_Bockel) to the [François Fillon](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_Fillon) government in May 2007. Along with [The Progressives](/source/The_Progressives) of [Éric Besson](/source/%C3%89ric_Besson), the Modern Left represented the left wing of the coalition supporting the then-President [Nicolas Sarkozy](/source/Nicolas_Sarkozy). The party calls itself [social liberal](/source/social_liberal),<ref name="Challenges"/> and supports a [social market economy](/source/social_market_economy).

In the [2008 local elections](/source/2008_French_municipal_elections), the party obtained around 40 councillors, and Bockel won a narrow re-election in [Mulhouse](/source/Mulhouse). However, the LGM incumbent in [Pau](/source/Pau%2C_Pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9es-Atlantiques), Yves Uriéta, was defeated. In the [2009 European Parliament election](/source/2009_European_Parliament_election_in_France), the party obtained two MEPs on the lists of the [Union for a Popular Movement](/source/Union_for_a_Popular_Movement). Both MEPs sat, like all other UMP MEPs, in the [European People's Party Group](/source/European_People's_Party_Group).

[Jean-Marie Bockel](/source/Jean-Marie_Bockel) was Mayor of [Mulhouse](/source/Mulhouse) from 1989 to 2010 and the party claims a number of councillors in various cities throughout the country.

In addition, Bockel is Secretary of State for Justice and Liberties in the [Fillon II](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_Fillon) government.
