The [archaeological site](/source/archaeological_site) of -'''Mitrou''' is located on a [tidal islet](/source/Tidal_island) in the [Gulf of Atalanti](/source/Gulf_of_Euboea), in [East Lokris](/source/Opuntian_Locris) in [Central Greece](/source/Central_Greece_(geographic_region)). [Excavation](/source/Excavation_(archaeology)) of the site is conducted under the direction of the [American School of Classical Studies](/source/American_School_of_Classical_Studies), and {{as of|2007|lc=y}} was ongoing{{update inline|date=April 2025}}.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.mitrou.org/ |title=Mitrou Archaeological Project |accessdate=2008-02-07 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080310022849/http://www.mitrou.org/ |archivedate=2008-03-10 }}</ref>

==Findings==
Finds from surface [survey](/source/Survey_(archaeology)) indicate humans were already present in the [Neolithic](/source/Neolithic) period; occupation continued throughout the [Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age) and into the Early [Iron Age](/source/Iron_Age). In addition to the settlement, a Bronze Age boat<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Van de Moortel |first=Aleydis |date=2012 |title=Middle Bronze Age Boat of Mitrou, Central Greece |url=https://mitrou.utk.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/2012-Van-de-Moortel.pdf |journal=BETWEEN CONTINENTS: Proceedings of the Twelfth Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology: Istanbul 2009 |pages=17–26}}</ref> and burials dating to the Bronze and Early Iron Ages have been found close to the settlement. Part of the site's importance derives from the apparently continuous habitation here after the end of the [Mycenaean palatial Bronze Age](/source/Mycenaean_Greece), with no gap apparent between the post-palatial Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. This situation is mirrored in other Central Greek sites, such as [Lefkandi](/source/Lefkandi), [Kalapodi](/source/Kalapodi), [Elateia](/source/Elateia), and Pyrgos Livanaton/[Kynos](/source/Kynos).
