**Mitchell Peninsula** ([66°20′S 110°32′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=66_20_S_110_32_E)) is a rocky [peninsula](/source/Peninsula), 2.5 nautical miles (5 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, lying between [O'Brien Bay](/source/O'Brien_Bay) and [Sparkes Bay](/source/Sparkes_Bay) at the east side of the [Windmill Islands](/source/Windmill_Islands), Antarctica. It was first mapped from aerial photographs taken by U.S. Navy [Operation Highjump](/source/Operation_Highjump) in February 1947 and thought to be an island connected by a steep snow ramp to the continental ice overlying [Budd Coast](/source/Budd_Coast), though the term peninsula was considered more appropriate by the [Wilkes Station](/source/Wilkes_Station) party of 1957. Mitchell Peninsula was named by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) for Captain [Ray A. Mitchell](/source/Ray_A._Mitchell), [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy), captain of the [USS *Cacapon*](/source/USS_Cacapon_(AO-52)), a tanker of the western task group of Operation Highjump, [Task Force](/source/Task_Force) 68 of 1946–47.[1]

On its southern side is [Bednarz Cove](/source/Bednarz_Cove), and [Drew Cove](/source/Drew_Cove) indents the west side.
