## History

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by [Native Americans](/source/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States). In 1803, most of [modern Kansas](/source/History_of_Kansas) was secured by the United States as part of the [Louisiana Purchase](/source/Louisiana_Purchase). In 1854, the [Kansas Territory](/source/Kansas_Territory) was organized, then in 1861 [Kansas](/source/Kansas) became the 34th [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state). In 1867, [Rice County](/source/Rice_County,_Kansas) was founded.

In 1878, [Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway](/source/Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway) and parties from [Marion](/source/Marion_County,_Kansas) and [McPherson counties](/source/McPherson_County,_Kansas) chartered the [Marion and McPherson Railway Company](/source/Marion_and_McPherson_Railway_Company).[3] In 1879, a branch line was built from [Florence](/source/Florence,_Kansas) to [McPherson](/source/McPherson,_Kansas), in 1880 it was extended to [Lyons](/source/Lyons,_Kansas), in 1881 it was extended to [Ellinwood](/source/Ellinwood,_Kansas).[4] The line was leased and operated by the [Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway](/source/Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway). The line from Florence to [Marion](/source/Marion,_Kansas), was abandoned in 1968.[5] In 1992, the line from Marion to McPherson was sold to [Central Kansas Railway](/source/Central_Kansas_Railway). In 1993, after heavy flood damage, the line from Marion to McPherson was abandoned. The original branch line connected Florence, Marion, [Canada](/source/Canada,_Kansas), [Hillsboro](/source/Hillsboro,_Kansas), [Lehigh](/source/Lehigh,_Kansas), [Canton](/source/Canton,_Kansas), [Galva](/source/Galva,_Kansas), McPherson, [Conway](/source/Conway,_Kansas), [Windom](/source/Windom,_Kansas), [Little River](/source/Little_River,_Kansas), Mitchell, Lyons, [Chase](/source/Chase,_Kansas) and [Ellinwood](/source/Ellinwood,_Kansas).
