The population was 124 at the time of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census).[2] ## History Mitchell was founded in 1854. Mitchell is the name of a friend of one of the founders, C. C. The [population density](/source/Population_density) was 219.7 inhabitants per square mile (84.8/km2). There were 65 housing units at an average density of 115.2 per square mile (44.5/km2). The [racial](/source/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States_census) makeup of the city was 97.6% [White](/source/White_Americans), 0.0% [Black or African American](/source/African_Americans), 0.0% [Native American](/source/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States), 0.0% [Asian](/source/Asian_Americans), 0.0% [Pacific Islander](/source/Pacific_Islander_Americans), 0.0% from other races and 2.4% from two or more races. [Hispanic or Latino](/source/Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans) persons of any race comprised 0.8% of the population. Of the 61 households, 24.6% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% were [married couples](/source/Marriage) living together, 9.8% were cohabitating couples, 19.7% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 31.1% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 47.5% of all households were non-families. 39.3% of all households were made up of individuals, 21.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The median age in the city was 47.7 years. 19.4% of the residents were under the age of 20; 3.2% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 25.0% were from 25 and 44; 28.2% were from 45 and 64; and 24.2% were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.71. The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% [White](/source/White_(U.S._Census)). [Hispanic](/source/Hispanic_(U.S._Census)) or [Latino](/source/Latino_(U.S._Census)) of any race were 1.94% of the population. There were 68 households, out of which 23.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were [married couples](/source/Marriage) living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.93. In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 121.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 127.8 males.
