**Miss World 2004**, the 54th edition of the [Miss World](/source/Miss_World) pageant, was held on 4 December 2004 at the [Crown of Beauty Theatre](/source/Crown_of_Beauty_Theatre) in [Sanya](/source/Sanya), China. The 2004 pageant marks the second straight year that Sanya played host of the pageant. [Rosanna Davison](/source/Rosanna_Davison) of [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland) crowned her successor [María Julia Mantilla](/source/Mar%C3%ADa_Julia_Mantilla) of [Peru](/source/Peru). 107 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown marking at that time, the biggest turnout in the pageant's 54-year history. That record was held until [Miss World 2008](/source/Miss_World_2008) where 109 nations sent representatives.

## Debuts, returns, and, withdrawals

This edition saw the debut of Fiji and the return of Egypt, El Salvador, Ghana, Honduras, Saint Lucia, Taiwan and Turks and Caicos Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands, which last competed in [1988](/source/Miss_World_1988), El Salvador in [1993](/source/Miss_World_1993), Saint Lucia in [1994](/source/Miss_World_1994), Egypt in [1997](/source/Miss_World_1997), Taiwan and Honduras in [2000](/source/Miss_World_2000) and Ghana in [2002](/source/Miss_World_2002).

Andorra, Belize, Guatemala, Lesotho, Northern Mariana Islands, Swaziland and Uruguay, withdrew from the competition.
