Extent of Alpine glaciation (blue: edge of the ice sheet in the Mindel and [Riss glacial](/source/Riss_glacial) periods)

The **Mindel glaciation** ([German](/source/German_language): *Mindel-Kaltzeit*, also *Mindel-Glazial*, *Mindel-Komplex* or, colloquially, *Mindel-Eiszeit*) is the third youngest [glacial stage](/source/Glacial_stage) in the [Alps](/source/Alps). Its name was coined by [Albrecht Penck](/source/Albrecht_Penck) and [Eduard Brückner](/source/Eduard_Br%C3%BCckner), who named it after the Swabian river, the [Mindel](/source/Mindel_(river)). The Mindel glacial occurred in the [Middle Pleistocene](/source/Middle_Pleistocene); it was preceded by the [Haslach-Mindel interglacial](/source/Haslach-Mindel_interglacial) (often regarded as part of [Günz](/source/Gunz_(geology))) and succeeded by the [Mindel-Riss interglacial](/source/Mindel-Riss_interglacial) ([Holstein interglacial](/source/Holstein_interglacial)).

The Mindel glaciation is commonly correlated with the [Elster glaciation](/source/Elster_glaciation) of northern Europe. The more precise timing is controversial since Mindel is commonly correlated to two different [marine isotope stages](/source/Marine_isotope_stage), MIS 12[1] (478–424 thousand years ago[2]) and MIS 10[3] (374–337 thousand years ago[2]). This ambiguity is much related to the correlation problem described in more detail in the article '[Elster glaciation](/source/Elster_glaciation)'.
