**Milton Montgomery** (May 3, 1825 – May 23, 1897) was a [colonel](/source/Colonel_(United_States)) in the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army) during the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) who was nominated and confirmed for appointment to the grade of [brevet](/source/Brevet_(military)) [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_general_(United_States)) in 1866.

Montgomery was born on May 3, 1825, in [Olivesburg, Ohio](/source/Olivesburg%2C_Ohio). He later moved to [Sparta, Wisconsin](/source/Sparta%2C_Wisconsin). Montgomery died on May 23, 1897, in [Omaha, Nebraska](/source/Omaha%2C_Nebraska), and is buried in [Wyuka Cemetery](/source/Wyuka_Cemetery).

## Career

Montgomery began his Civil War service in command of the [25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment](/source/25th_Wisconsin_Infantry_Regiment) on September 14, 1862.[1] He suffered the loss of his right arm at [Decatur, Georgia](/source/Decatur%2C_Georgia), during the [Battle of Atlanta](/source/Battle_of_Atlanta), where he was captured on July 22, 1864.[1] He subsequently was exchanged.[1] Despite the loss of his arm, Montgomery later took part in the [Carolinas campaign](/source/Carolinas_campaign).[1] He commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, [XVII Corps](/source/XVII_Corps_(Union_Army)) of the [Army of the Tennessee](/source/Army_of_the_Tennessee) from January 29, 1865, to March 28, 1865, and from May 20, 1865, to June 7, 1865.[1] Montgomery was mustered out of the volunteers on June 7, 1865.[1] On January 13, 1866, [President](/source/President_of_the_United_States) [Andrew Johnson](/source/Andrew_Johnson) nominated Montgomery for appointment to the grade of [brevet](/source/Brevet_(military)) [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_general_(United_States)) of volunteers to rank from March 13, 1865, and the [United States Senate](/source/United_States_Senate) confirmed the appointment on March 12, 1866.[2]
