Carthen was born in 1960 and graduated from [Bloomfield Hills](/source/Bloomfield_Hills%2C_Michigan) [Lahser High School](/source/Lahser_High_School) in 1980.<ref name=PFA>{{cite web|title=Milt Carthens|publisher=Pro Football Archives|accessdate=July 2, 2022|url=https://www.profootballarchives.com/playerc/cart06200.html}}</ref>

He enrolled at the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) and played for [Michigan Wolverines football](/source/Michigan_Wolverines_football) team under [Bo Schembechler](/source/Bo_Schembechler).
