The '''Militant Group''' was an early British [Trotskyist](/source/Trotskyist) group, formed in 1935 by [Denzil Dean Harber](/source/Denzil_Dean_Harber), former leader of the [Marxist Group](/source/Marxist_Group_(UK)) in the [ILP](/source/Independent_Labour_Party), as a separate [entrist](/source/entrism) group inside the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)).

Initially known as the '''Bolshevik-Leninist Group''', the entrist group was producing a bulletin ''Youth Militant'' in 1935 and a journal ''Militant'' by 1937; the group became known as the Militant Group and later the '''Militant Labour League''' the same year.<ref>Barberis, Peter; McHugh, John; Tyldesley, Mike. ''Encyclopedia of British and Irish Political Organizations: Parties, Groups and Movements of the 20th Century.'' A&C Black, 2000, p155</ref>

The group was strengthened by an influx of [South Africa](/source/South_Africa)n Trotskyists, including [Ted Grant](/source/Ted_Grant) and Ralph Lee (Raphael Levy). However, allegations concerning Lee (relating to false rumours of misuse of strike funds in South Africa) prompted around ten members, including Grant, Lee, [Jock Haston](/source/Jock_Haston), [Betty Hamilton](/source/Betty_Hamilton) and [Gerry Healy](/source/Gerry_Healy) to split in 1937 and form the [Workers International League](/source/Workers_International_League_(1937)).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.bolshevik.org/Pamphlets/CWI/CWI_history.html|title = A Brief Sketch of the Militant Tendency's History}}</ref>

In 1938, the Militant Group merged with the [Revolutionary Socialist League](/source/Revolutionary_Socialist_League_(UK%2C_1938)), and the [Revolutionary Socialist Party](/source/Revolutionary_Socialist_Party_(UK)) to form a new [Revolutionary Socialist League](/source/Revolutionary_Socialist_League_(UK%2C_1938)), the official section of the [Fourth International](/source/Fourth_International) in Britain.
