**Milan Kymlicka** (Czech: Milan Kymlička; 15 May 1936[1] – 9 October 2008) was a [Czech](/source/Czechs)-Canadian [arranger](/source/Arranger), [composer](/source/Composer) and [conductor](/source/Conducting). He was known for his composition of [film and television scores](/source/Film_scores),[2] including those for the animated television series *[Rupert](/source/Rupert_(TV_series))*, *[Babar](/source/Babar_(TV_series))*, *[Anatole](/source/Anatole_(TV_series))*, *[The Busy World of Richard Scarry](/source/The_Busy_World_of_Richard_Scarry)* and *[The Adventures of Paddington Bear](/source/The_Adventures_of_Paddington_Bear)* and the live-action television series *[Lassie](/source/Lassie_(1997_TV_series))* and *[Little Men](/source/Little_Men_(TV_series))*. He received a [Genie Award](/source/Genie_Award) in 1996 for his work on *[Margaret's Museum](/source/Margaret's_Museum)*.

## Early life

Kymlicka was born in [Louny](/source/Louny), Czechoslovakia.[3] He earned degrees from the [Academy of Performing Arts in Prague](/source/Academy_of_Performing_Arts_in_Prague) and the [Prague Conservatory](/source/Prague_Conservatory). At the latter institution he was a pupil of [Emil Hlobil](/source/Emil_Hlobil).

## Career

Kymlicka began his work as a composer in his native country and by 1967, he had produced 20 [film scores](/source/Film_score), a [ballet](/source/Ballet), a [cello concerto](/source/Cello_concerto), several works for solo [piano](/source/Piano), a number of [string quartets](/source/String_quartet), and created the theme for an animated television series.[4]

After the [Prague Spring](/source/Prague_Spring) in 1968, Kymlicka emigrated to Canada, where he settled in [Toronto](/source/Toronto), Ontario.[5] By the early 1970s, he was working as a studio arranger/conductor at the [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation](/source/Canadian_Broadcasting_Corporation). In 1974, Kymlicka became a naturalized Canadian citizen. That year, he arranged music for and conducted the [Hamilton Philharmonic](/source/Hamilton_Philharmonic), accompanying pop musician [Ian Thomas](/source/Ian_Thomas_(Canadian_musician));[6] his arrangements were included on some of Thomas' recordings in the 1970s.[7]

Kymlicka continued working as a composer, arranger, and conductor for film, television, and radio.[5][8][9] His composition "Four Valses" was recorded by pianist [Antonín Kubálek](/source/Anton%C3%ADn_Kub%C3%A1lek) in New York.[10]

Kymlicka died in Toronto in 2008. Among his last released works was *[Závoj tkaný touhami](/source/Z%C3%A1voj_tkan%C3%BD_touhami)* (originally by [Tanita Tikaram](/source/Tanita_Tikaram)), arranged for the 2008 album *[Ohrožený druh](/source/Ohro%C5%BEen%C3%BD_druh)*.
