# Milan Gvero

**Milan Gvero** ([Serbian Cyrillic](/source/Serbian_Cyrillic): Милан Гверо) (4 December 1937 – 17 February 2013)[1] was a Bosnian Serb Army (VRS/[Army of Republika Srpska](/source/Army_of_Republika_Srpska)) general sentenced to five years in jail by the [International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)](/source/International_Criminal_Tribunal_for_the_former_Yugoslavia) on charges of war crimes and [crimes against humanity](/source/Crimes_against_humanity) committed during the [Bosnian War](/source/War_in_Bosnia_and_Herzegovina) of 1992–95.

In response to [President](/source/President_of_Republika_Srpska) [Radovan Karadžić](/source/Radovan_Karad%C5%BEi%C4%87)'s attempt to remove [Ratko Mladić](/source/Ratko_Mladi%C4%87) as commander of the VRS in early August 1995, General Gvero detained Karadžić for a day in the last week of August, and berated him for his hostility to Mladić and the [army high command](/source/General_Staff_of_the_Army_of_Republika_Srpska).[2]

He was replaced on 23 October 1996 on the orders of President of Republika Srpska Biljana Plavšić. In 2005, he voluntarily surrendered to the Hague Tribunal,[3] which sentenced him to 5 years in prison for persecution and crimes against humanity, but found him non-guilty of murders and deportation.[4] He was released on 29 June.

On 17 February 2013, Gvero died at the [Military Medical Academy](/source/Military_Medical_Academy_(Serbia)) in [Belgrade](/source/Belgrade), aged 75[5] as a result of a leg amputation.[6]
