**Michael Evan Willemse** (born 14 February 1993) is a South African [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player for [Ealing Trailfinders](/source/Ealing_Trailfinders_Rugby_Club) in [Championship Rugby](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Championship_Rugby&action=edit&redlink=1).[1] His regular position is hooker.

## Career

### Youth and Varsity Rugby

Willemse was included in the [Eastern Province Kings](/source/Eastern_Province_Elephants) squad at the 2010 Under-18 Academy Week and also played for the [Eastern Province U19](/source/Eastern_Province_Elephants) team in the Under-19 Provincial Championship competition in the same year. In 2011, he also represented them at the [Craven Week](/source/Craven_Week) competition.

In [2013](/source/2013_Varsity_Cup), he played [Varsity Cup](/source/Varsity_Cup) rugby with the [UCT Ikey Tigers](/source/Ikey_Tigers), scoring three tries in six starts.

### Western Province / Stormers

He was called up to the [Western Province](/source/Stormers) [Vodacom Cup](/source/Vodacom_Cup) squad at the conclusion of the Varsity Cup competition and made his first class debut on 13 April 2013 against [Argentina](/source/Argentina) side [Pampas XV](/source/Pampas_XV)[2] and made four appearances in the competition.

He made his [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup) debut a few months later when he came off the substitutes' bench for their match against [Sharks](/source/Sharks_(rugby_union)) following [Tiaan Liebenberg](/source/Tiaan_Liebenberg)'s late withdrawal through injury.[3][4]

In 2014, he was called up into the [Stormers](/source/Stormers) squad for their [2014 Super Rugby](/source/2014_Super_Rugby_season) match against the [Sharks](/source/Sharks_(rugby_union)), following [Deon Fourie](/source/Deon_Fourie)'s late withdrawal through injury.[5]

### UK

On 25 March 2019, Willemse traveled to Scotland to sign for [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh_Rugby) in the [Pro14](/source/Pro14) on a two-year deal from the 2019-20 season.[6] Following his release from Edinburgh, he signed for English club [London Irish](/source/London_Irish) in the [Premiership Rugby](/source/Premiership_Rugby) from the 2021-22 season.[7]

### Representative rugby

In 2013, he was included in the [South Africa Under-20](/source/South_Africa_national_under-20_rugby_union_team) squad for the [2013 IRB Junior World Championship](/source/2013_IRB_Junior_World_Championship). He made three substitute appearance – against the [USA](/source/United_States_national_under-20_rugby_union_team) (scoring two tries),[8] [England](/source/England_national_under-20_rugby_union_team),[9] and [France](/source/France_national_under-20_rugby_union_team).[10]
