The {{convert|6|ft|4|in|abbr=on}}, {{convert|215|lb|abbr=on}} right-hander was signed by the [Baltimore Orioles](/source/Baltimore_Orioles) before the 1964 season, selected by the [Philadelphia Phillies](/source/Philadelphia_Phillies) from Baltimore in the 1964 first-year draft (November 30), and, four years later, chosen by the [Montreal Expos](/source/Montreal_Expos) as the 15th pick in the [1968 MLB expansion draft](/source/1968_Major_League_Baseball_expansion_draft). He was born in [Denver](/source/Denver), [Colorado](/source/Colorado).
Wegener played for the Expos from {{mlby|1969}} to {{mlby|1970}}, appearing in 57 [games](/source/games_pitched), 42 of them [starts](/source/Starting_pitcher). He had "good stuff" but was prone to wildness, as evidenced by 152 [bases on balls](/source/bases_on_balls) and 17 [wild pitch](/source/wild_pitch)es in just 270 [innings pitched](/source/innings_pitched). His [BB/9IP](/source/BB%2F9IP) was 5.07, much higher than the [National League](/source/National_League_(baseball)) average at that time.
Wegener is perhaps best known for giving up [Willie Mays](/source/Willie_Mays)'s 3,000th [hit](/source/hit_(baseball)) on July 18, 1970.
