**Mike Sanderson** (born 29 May 1971) is a [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand) [sailor](/source/Sailing_(sport)), perhaps best known for being awarded the prestigious [ISAF World Sailor of the Year Award](/source/ISAF_World_Sailor_of_the_Year_Awards) for winning the [2005–06 Volvo Ocean Race](/source/2005%E2%80%9306_Volvo_Ocean_Race) as skipper of *[ABN Amro I](/source/ABN_Amro_I)*.[1][2] At the age of 35, he became the youngest skipper to ever win a [Volvo Ocean Race](/source/Volvo_Ocean_Race) in the [2005–2006](/source/2005%E2%80%9306_Volvo_Ocean_Race) edition of the race. (Lionel Péan had previously won the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1986, aged 29).[3][4]

From 2007 to 2010, he was Team Director of [Team Origin](/source/Team_Origin), a potential British challenger for the [2013 America's Cup](/source/2013_America's_Cup).[5]

He returned to [skipper](/source/Skipper_(boating)) Team Sanya (the Irish-Chinese entry in the race) in the [2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_Volvo_Ocean_Race). The boat, formerly known as *Telefónica Blue* in the [2008–09 Volvo Ocean Race](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_Volvo_Ocean_Race), has been plagued with instrument and hull failures.[6] As of 30 March 2012 the boat is currently being shipped to [Miami](/source/Miami) to be repaired so it can rejoin the race in Leg 7.[7]

## Personal life

In 2006, he married [British](/source/United_Kingdom) round-the-world yachtswoman [Emma Richards](/source/Emma_Richards_(yachtswoman)) in [Cowes](/source/Cowes), [UK](/source/UK).[8][9] He also is the current CEO of Doyle Sails NZ.[10]
