==Playing career==
Mottau was born in [Boston, Massachusetts](/source/Boston%2C_Massachusetts), but grew up in [Avon, Massachusetts](/source/Avon%2C_Massachusetts).

Mottau played four years of college hockey at [Boston College](/source/Boston_College), and was the recipient of the [Hobey Baker Award](/source/Hobey_Baker_Award) for top men's collegiate hockey player during his senior season.  He made his [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) debut with the Rangers during the [2000–01 season](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_NHL_season).  He played nineteen games with the Rangers over two seasons, and four with the [Calgary Flames](/source/Calgary_Flames) during the [2002–03 season](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_NHL_season).  Mottau played four seasons in the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) before returning to the NHL in the [2007–08 season](/source/2007%E2%80%9308_NHL_season) with the New Jersey Devils.
