Metcalf began his career with [Everton](/source/Everton_F.C.), before joining [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.) as a part-timer in May 1957 to allow him to complete a degree course in [chemistry](/source/chemistry).<ref name="where now">''Where are they now?'', Chester City v. Stockport County matchday programme; 19/9/1992; p 20</ref> Over the next six years he scored 58 times in 121 league games for Wrexham before switching to local rivals [Chester](/source/Chester_City_F.C.) for £5,000 in December 1963.<ref>Sumner (1997), p 76</ref> The following season saw Chester score 141 in [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division), [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) and [Football League Cup](/source/Football_League_Cup) matches, with Metcalf netting 37 of them.<ref name="stats6465">Sumner (1997), stats section (64–65)</ref> His fellow forwards [Jimmy Humes](/source/Jimmy_Humes), [Elfed Morris](/source/Elfed_Morris), [Hugh Ryden](/source/Hugh_Ryden) and [Gary Talbot](/source/Gary_Talbot) also all scored at least 20 goals during the campaign.<ref name="stats6465"/>
