**Michael J. Jones** (born 18 April 1968) is an English retired professional [football](/source/Association_football) [referee](/source/Referee_(association_football)) based in [Chester](/source/Chester). He is a member of the [Cheshire County Football Association](/source/Cheshire_County_Football_Association).

He began refereeing in [the Football League](/source/The_Football_League) in 1997 and was promoted in 2008 to the list of [Select Group Referees](/source/Select_Group_Referees) who officiate all [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) fixtures. In 2009, he refereed the [FA Trophy final](/source/2009_FA_Trophy_Final) at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium). Jones is now the Head of Refereeing at the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League).

## Career

Jones was promoted to [the Football League](/source/English_Football_League)'s list of referees in 1997, his first match in charge being [Mansfield Town](/source/Mansfield_Town_F.C.) against [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.) in August of that year.

His first game at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium) was also in 2007: the [Football League Two](/source/Football_League_Two) [play-off final](/source/2007_Football_League_Two_play-off_Final) which saw [Bristol Rovers](/source/Bristol_Rovers_F.C.) defeat [Shrewsbury Town](/source/Shrewsbury_Town_F.C.) 3–1. Jones dismissed Shrewsbury's [Marc Tierney](/source/Marc_Tierney) in the last minute for a second bookable offence: Tierney became the second man to be sent off at the new Wembley.

In 2008 Jones became a [Select Group referee](/source/Select_Group_Referees), allowing him to regularly officiate games in the [Premier League](/source/Premier_League). His first match in England's top flight was Hull City versus [Wigan Athletic](/source/Wigan_Athletic_F.C.).

In October 2009 Jones [allowed a goal](/source/Sunderland_A.F.C._1%E2%80%930_Liverpool_F.C._(2009)) scored by [Darren Bent](/source/Darren_Bent) for [Sunderland](/source/Sunderland_A.F.C.) against [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.), when his shot took a deflection off a [beach ball](/source/Beach_ball) which had been thrown onto the pitch by a fan in the Liverpool supporters' section.[1] He was subsequently demoted for one week to officiate a match in the [Football League Championship](/source/EFL_Championship).[2] The beach ball from the incident was sent for display at England's [National Football Museum](/source/National_Football_Museum) in Manchester.

Jones was the fourth official for the [2012 FA Cup final](/source/2012_FA_Cup_final), with [Phil Dowd](/source/Phil_Dowd) taking charge.[3]

In the final moments of a 2013 Premier League game between [Norwich City](/source/Norwich_City_F.C.) and [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.), Cardiff's goalkeeper [David Marshall](/source/David_Marshall_(Scottish_footballer)) put the ball out of play to allow Norwich's [Alexander Tettey](/source/Alexander_Tettey) to receive treatment from a physio. [Ricky van Wolfswinkel](/source/Ricky_van_Wolfswinkel) took the subsequent throw for Norwich and his teammate [Leroy Fer](/source/Leroy_Fer) tapped the ball into the net as Marshall looked on. The goal was disallowed by Jones who stated he had not blown his whistle to restart play. Cardiff's manager [Malky Mackay](/source/Malky_Mackay) praised the official's decision.[4]

Former [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) referee [Dermot Gallagher](/source/Dermot_Gallagher) told [Sky Sports](/source/Sky_Sports) Jones refereed his final game on Saturday 5 May 2018 due to retirement.[5] The match at [The Hawthorns](/source/The_Hawthorns) saw [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.) beat [Tottenham Hotspur](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.) 1–0.
