Hanke was born in [Hamm](/source/Hamm%2C_North_Rhine-Westphalia). He made his debut in the [2001–02 season](/source/2001%E2%80%9302_Bundesliga) of the German [Bundesliga](/source/Bundesliga) for [Schalke 04](/source/Schalke_04). He was transferred to [VfL Wolfsburg](/source/VfL_Wolfsburg) during the [2005–06 season](/source/2005%E2%80%9306_Bundesliga) upon request by then Wolfsburg manager [Thomas Strunz](/source/Thomas_Strunz).

In May 2007, Hanke moved to [Hannover 96](/source/Hannover_96), and netted eleven league goals, while the side achieved a midtable final position.

On 31 May 2013, Hanke joined [SC Freiburg](/source/SC_Freiburg) on a free transfer. He said "It's a great package here in Freiburg.
