# Mike Galligan

**Michael Galligan** (born 17 January 1968) is an Irish [hurler](/source/Hurling) who played for club side [Claughaun](/source/Claughaun_GAA) and at inter-county level with the [Limerick senior hurling team](/source/Limerick_senior_hurling_team).[1]

## Career

Galligan first played competitive hurling at primary school in [Caherdavin](/source/Caherdavin) before lining out for [CBS Sexton Street](/source/CBS_Sexton_Street) team in the [Dr. Harty Cup](/source/Dr._Harty_Cup). His early club career with [CLaughaun](/source/Claughaun_GAA) yielded county championship titles in every juvenile and underage grade before winning his only [County Championship](/source/Limerick_Senior_Hurling_Championship) title at senior level in 1986. Galligan's first inter-county experience came during a two-year spell with the Limerick minor team, which was followed by two seasons with the under-21 team. He made his senior debut against [Kilkenny](/source/Kilkenny_GAA) during the [1989–90 league](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_National_Hurling_League). Galligan was a stalwart of the team for much of the following decade and was included on the Limerick teams that lost the [All-Ireland finals](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship) in [1994](/source/1994_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship_Final) and [1996](/source/1996_All-Ireland_Senior_Hurling_Championship). His career honours include two [Munster Championship](/source/Munster_Senior_Hurling_Championship) medals, two [National League](/source/National_Hurling_League) titles and a [Railway Cup](/source/Railway_Cup) medal with [Munster](/source/Munster_GAA). Galligan retired from inter-county hurling in December 2000.[2]

## Personal life

Galligan was born in [Cork](/source/Cork_(city)) but was raised in [Limerick](/source/Limerick_(city)) after his family relocated there shortly after he was born. His father, [Billy Galligan](/source/Billy_Galligan), won a [Cork County Championship](/source/Cork_Senior_Hurling_Championship) title with [Blackrock](/source/Blackrock_GAA) in 1961 and also lined out with the [Cork senior hurling team](/source/Cork_senior_hurling_team). Galligan's uncle, Tommy Joy, was a prominent player with [London Irish](/source/London_Irish) [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) team.[citation needed]
