# Mike Betts

**Michael Betts** (born 21 September 1956) is an English retired professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [centre-back](/source/Centre-back).[1]

## Career

Betts played in the [Blackpool](/source/Blackpool_F.C.) youth system. In 1974, the Blackpool youths won the [Caligaris](/source/Umberto_Caligaris) International Tournament.[2] In 1975, he moved up to the first team. In 1976, he transferred to [Sligo Rovers](/source/Sligo_Rovers_F.C.)[3] where he won Sligo's first ever [League of Ireland](/source/League_of_Ireland) Championship in the 1976–77 season.[4]

In November 1977 he signed for [John Giles](/source/Johnny_Giles) at [Shamrock Rovers](/source/Shamrock_Rovers_F.C.)[5] where he made his only league appearance at [Glenmalure Park](/source/Glenmalure_Park). Despite scoring the winner against a [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.) selection the same week he left Ireland soon after.

In 1979, Betts played for the [Cleveland Cobras](/source/Cleveland_Cobras) in the [American Soccer League](/source/American_Soccer_League_(1933-1983)).
