The **Mier Park** (English: [/mjə(ɹ)/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English); Polish pronunciation: [\[ˈmjɛr\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Polish); [Polish](/source/Polish_language): *Park Mirowski*), also known as the **Downtown Park** ([Polish](/source/Polish_language): *Park Śródmiejski*), is an [urban park](/source/Urban_park) in [Warsaw](/source/Warsaw), Poland, within the [Downtown](/source/Downtown%2C_Warsaw) district. It is placed in the neighbourhood of [North Downtown](/source/North_Downtown), between John Paul II Avenue, [Marshal Street](/source/Marsza%C5%82kowska_Street%2C_Warsaw), [Mier Halls](/source/Mier_Halls), and the neighbourhood of [Za Żelazną Bramą](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Osiedle_Za_%C5%BBelazn%C4%85_Bram%C4%85&action=edit&redlink=1).[1][2]

## Name

The Mier Park was named after the nearby [Mier Halls](/source/Mier_Halls) and Mier Square, which in turn were named after the [Mier Barracks](/source/Mier_Barracks), built there in the 18th century. They in turn were named after [Wilhelm Mier](/source/Wilhelm_Mier), who was the commanding officer of the [Crown Horse Guard Regiment](/source/Crown_Horse_Guard_Regiment) stationed there.[3][4]

It is also alternatively known as the Downtown Park ([Polish](/source/Polish_language): *Park Śródmiejski*), due to its location in the [Downtown](/source/Downtown%2C_Warsaw) district, and relatively close placement to the city centre.[5]

## History

The Mier Park was opened in the 1960s.[3]

In June 1968 in the park was unveiled the moment of [Julian Marchlewski](/source/Julian_Marchlewski), a communist politician and revolutionary, who was the chairperson of the [Provisional Polish Revolutionary Committee](/source/Provisional_Polish_Revolutionary_Committee). It was deconstructed in 1990.[3][6]

On 21 May 2019 in the park was unveiled the [monument](/source/Feliks_Stamm_Monument) of [Feliks Stamm](/source/Feliks_Stamm), a 20th-century [boxing](/source/Boxing) champion. The monument was placed next to the East Hall of the [Mier Halls](/source/Mier_Halls), where five Polish boxers won gold medals at the [1953 European Amateur Boxing Championships](/source/1953_European_Amateur_Boxing_Championships). The monument was made by sculptor [Lubomir Grigorov](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lubomir_Grigorov&action=edit&redlink=1).[7]

On 2 March 2023, in the park was unveiled the [monument](/source/Piotr_Drzewiecki_Monument) of [Piotr Drzewicki](/source/Piotr_Drzewiecki_(mayor)) who was the [mayor of Warsaw](/source/List_of_city_mayors_of_Warsaw) from 1917 to 1921.[8][9]

## Characteristics

The Mier Park has the form of a long and thin rectangular strip of land between [Jana Pawła II Avenue](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jana_Paw%C5%82a_II_Avenue,_Warsaw&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Marszałkowska Street](/source/Marsza%C5%82kowska_Street).[1][2] Its central pathway is Piotra Drzewieckiego Avenue.[10] The park has the total area of 5.35 ha.[1]

It borders the Mier Square and [Mier Halls](/source/Mier_Halls) to the north, the [Iron Gate Square](/source/Iron_Gate_Square) to the north-east, and [Za Żelazną Bramą](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Osiedle_Za_%C5%BBelazn%C4%85_Bram%C4%85&action=edit&redlink=1) neighbourhood to the south.[2]

In the park are located the [monument](/source/Feliks_Stamm_Monument) to [Feliks Stamm](/source/Feliks_Stamm) by [Lubomir Grigorov](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lubomir_Grigorov&action=edit&redlink=1),[7] the [monument](/source/Piotr_Drzewiecki_Monument) to [Piotr Drzewicki](/source/Piotr_Drzewiecki_(mayor)),[8] and the sculpture of [Mermaid of Warsaw](/source/Mermaid_of_Warsaw) by Ryszard Kozłowski.[2]
