"**Middle Ground**" is a song by American [pop rock](/source/Pop_rock) band [Maroon 5](/source/Maroon_5). It was released as a single through [222](/source/222_Records) and [Interscope Records](/source/Interscope_Records) on May 19, 2023.

The remix, a collaboration with American country singer [Mickey Guyton](/source/Mickey_Guyton), was released on August 11, 2023.[3]

## Background

In a March 2023 interview with [Ryan Seacrest](/source/Ryan_Seacrest) on *[On Air with Ryan Seacrest](/source/On_Air_with_Ryan_Seacrest)*, [Adam Levine](/source/Adam_Levine) revealed that new music was to be released within the year. "We are working on something that is unbelievably cool [...] I'm very excited about this thing," he said to Seacrest.[4] On May 11, 2023, the band announced on social media that "Middle Ground" would be released on May 19, 2023.[5]

## Composition

A [pop](/source/Pop_(music)) and [soft rock](/source/Soft_rock) song, "Middle Ground" was written by [Adam Levine](/source/Adam_Levine), [Andrew Watt](/source/Andrew_Watt_(record_producer)), Gregory Heinn, [Jon Bellion](/source/Jon_Bellion), [Marvin Hemmings](/source/Marvin_Hemmings), [Pete Nappi](/source/Pete_Nappi), and [Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins](/source/Rodney_Jerkins) and was produced by Andrew Watt, Jon Bellion, and Pete Nappi.

## Music video

The music video for "Middle Ground" was released on May 23, 2023. It was directed by [David Dobkin](/source/David_Dobkin_(director)), who has also directed videos for Maroon 5 in the past such as "[Sugar](/source/Sugar_(Maroon_5_song))", "[Girls Like You](/source/Girls_Like_You)", and "[Memories](/source/Memories_(Maroon_5_song))". The video features appearances from [Adam Levine](/source/Adam_Levine)'s wife [Behati Prinsloo](/source/Behati_Prinsloo), and their two children, Dusty Rose and Gio Grace Levine, as well as members of the band performing the song in an indoor studio and having an outdoor gathering.[6]

## Live performances

On May 23, 2023, Maroon 5 debuted "Middle Ground" live on the [season 23 finale](/source/The_Voice_(American_season_23)) of the American reality television series *[The Voice](/source/The_Voice_(American_TV_series))*.[7] It was the group's first performance on the show since performing "[Beautiful Mistakes](/source/Beautiful_Mistakes)" on the [season 20 finale](/source/The_Voice_(American_season_20)) in May 2021.[8] On August 12, 2023, Maroon 5 performing the song with special guest, Mickey Guyton on the final night of Maroon 5: The Las Vegas Residency.[9]

## Critical reception

*[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))* described "Middle Ground" as a "return to form", reminiscent to Maroon 5's debut studio album, *[Songs About Jane](/source/Songs_About_Jane)* (2002).[10]
