{{Short description|American Civil War-era military district}}
The '''Middle Department''' was an administrative military district created by the [United States War Department](/source/United_States_Department_of_War) early in the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) to administer the troops in the [Middle Atlantic states](/source/Mid-Atlantic_States).

The department was created on March 22, 1862 by the [Adjutant General](/source/Adjutant_General)'s Office in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.) It combined all Federal troops in the states of [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey), [Delaware](/source/Delaware), [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania) and the counties of [Anne Arundel](/source/Anne_Arundel_County%2C_Maryland), [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore_County%2C_Maryland), [Cecil](/source/Cecil_County%2C_Maryland), and [Harford](/source/Harford_County%2C_Maryland) in [Maryland](/source/Maryland), with headquarters in [Baltimore, Maryland](/source/Baltimore%2C_Maryland). [Maj. Gen.](/source/Major_general_(United_States)) [John A. Dix](/source/John_Adams_Dix) was designated as its first commander.

The Middle Department was dissolved July 22, 1862, when it was renamed [VIII Corps](/source/VIII_Corps_(Union_Army)). Although no longer an official organization, the Middle Department designation continued to be used in reference to VIII Corps and the general administrative district that it originally encompassed.
