The **Mid-Penn Conference (MPC)** is a [high school](/source/Secondary_school) [athletic conference](/source/Athletic_conference) with its membership base located in south central [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania). Founded in 1982, the conference and its members are affiliated with the [Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association](/source/Pennsylvania_Interscholastic_Athletic_Association), and all but three schools are located in PIAA District 3.

## History

### 1982-2004

The Mid-Penn Conference was created in 1982 when twenty-seven schools from four different athletic conferences in south central Pennsylvania joined together to create a single organization.[1] Members of the [Blue Mountain League](/source/Blue_Mountain_League_(PIAA)) ([Big Spring](/source/Big_Spring_School_District), [Boiling Springs](/source/Boiling_Springs_High_School_(Pennsylvania)), [Camp Hill](/source/Camp_Hill_High_School), [Northern York](/source/Northern_York_County_School_District), [Shippensburg](/source/Shippensburg_Area_School_District) and [Susquenita](/source/Susquenita_High_School)), [Capital Area Conference](/source/Capital_Area_Conference) ([Cumberland Valley](/source/Cumberland_Valley_High_School), [East Pennsboro](/source/East_Pennsboro_High_School), [Hershey](/source/Hershey_High_School), [Lower Dauphin](/source/Lower_Dauphin_High_School), [Mechanicsburg](/source/Mechanicsburg_Area_Senior_High_School), [Middletown](/source/Middletown_Area_High_School), [Milton Hershey](/source/Milton_Hershey_School), [Palmyra](/source/Palmyra_Area_High_School), [Red Land](/source/Red_Land_High_School) and [Susquehanna Township](/source/Susquehanna_Township_High_School)), [South Central Athletic League](/source/South_Central_Athletic_League) ([Bishop McDevitt](/source/Bishop_McDevitt_High_School_(Harrisburg,_Pennsylvania)), [Carlisle](/source/Carlisle_High_School_(Carlisle,_Pennsylvania)), [Cedar Cliff](/source/Cedar_Cliff_High_School), [Central Dauphin](/source/Central_Dauphin_High_School), [Central Dauphin East](/source/Central_Dauphin_East_High_School), [Chambersburg](/source/Chambersburg_Area_Senior_High_School), [Delone Catholic](/source/Delone_Catholic_High_School), [Steelton-Highspire](/source/Steelton-Highspire_School_District) and [Trinity](/source/Trinity_High_School_(Lower_Allen_Township,_Pennsylvania))) and [Tri-Valley League](/source/Tri-Valley_League_(Pennsylvania)) ([West Perry](/source/West_Perry_High_School)), along with former independents [Harrisburg](/source/Harrisburg_High_School_(Pennsylvania)), composed the MPC's inaugural roster.[2] At the time of its founding, it was the largest athletic conference in the PIAA in both membership and geographic footprint, spanning seven counties ([Adams](/source/Adams_County,_Pennsylvania), [Cumberland](/source/Cumberland_County,_Pennsylvania), [Dauphin](/source/Dauphin_County,_Pennsylvania), [Franklin](/source/Franklin_County,_Pennsylvania), [Lebanon](/source/Lebanon_County,_Pennsylvania), [Perry](/source/Perry_County,_Pennsylvania) and [York](/source/York_County,_Pennsylvania)).[3] The conference experienced its first membership change in 1986, when [Adams County](/source/Adams_County,_Pennsylvania)-based Delone Catholic left to join the smaller Blue Mountain League.[4] Six years later, eight of the eleven schools in the Blue Mountain League ([Bermudian Springs](/source/Bermudian_Springs_High_School), [Biglerville](/source/Biglerville_High_School), [Fairfield](/source/Fairfield_Area_High_School), [Gettysburg](/source/Gettysburg_Area_High_School), [Greencastle-Antrim](/source/Greencastle-Antrim_School_District), [James Buchanan](/source/James_Buchanan_High_School), [Scotland](/source/Scotland,_Pennsylvania) and [Waynesboro](/source/Waynesboro_Area_Senior_High_School)) became MPC members, bringing about the demise of their former conference.[5] Ironically, the merger came after an attempt from Waynesboro, the largest member of the conference, to join the MPC a few months earlier.[6]

### 2004-2018

The Mid-Penn Conference experienced a decade-plus of stability in its membership ledger until 2004, when Biglerville was accepted as members the [York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association](/source/York-Adams_Interscholastic_Athletic_Association).[7] Bermudian Springs and Fairfield followed Biglerville into the YAIAA a few days later.[8] At the same time, the MPC took on four former independents as football-only associate members: [Altoona](/source/Altoona_Area_High_School), [Central Mountain](/source/Central_Mountain_High_School), [Hollidaysburg](/source/Hollidaysburg_Area_High_School) and [State College](/source/State_College_Area_High_School).[9] Only a few weeks after their entry, Central Mountain backed out on joining the Mid-Penn Conference after they were reclassified into a smaller division by the PIAA.[10] [Williamsport](/source/Williamsport_High_School_(Pennsylvania)) had also expressed interest in joining the MPC's football roster at that time but chose to remain in the [Wyoming Valley Conference](/source/Wyoming_Valley_Conference) instead.[11] A few years after joining, the MPC lost two football-only associate members. Hollidaysburg left after just two seasons[12] and Altoona made their departure after the 2009 football season.[13] That same year, the [Scotland School for Veteran's Children](/source/Scotland_School_for_Veteran's_Children), a state-run public school for children of active and former military members, closed its doors due to state budget cuts.[14] In 2012, State College joined the MPC as full members after nearly a decade of associate membership,[15] and they were joined by the newly created [Mifflin County High School](/source/Mifflin_County_High_School) in [Lewistown](/source/Lewistown,_Pennsylvania).[16] Two years later, Gettysburg[17] and Susquenita[18] left the MPC for membership in the YAIAA and Tri-Valley League, respectively.

### 2018-present

Altoona rejoined the conference for football as an associate member in 2018 along with three other sports (boys' basketball, girls' basketball and boys volleyball).[19] Two years later, Altoona's baseball, softball and girls' volleyball programs joined the Mid-Penn.[3] The MPC also acquired six new associate members when the Tri-Valley League dropped sponsorship of football in 2020: [Halifax](/source/Halifax_Area_High_School), [Juniata](/source/Juniata_High_School), [Line Mountain](/source/Line_Mountain_Jr./Sr._High_School), [Newport](/source/Newport_High_School_(Pennsylvania)), [Upper Dauphin](/source/Upper_Dauphin_Area_High_School) and former full members Susquenita.[20] Gettysburg also rejoined the conference in 2022,[21] bringing the total number of member schools to its current tally of thirty-two. For the 2026 football season, the Mid-Penn Conference will be losing Big Spring and James Buchanan as members.[22] Both schools will be joining the YAIAA as associate members for shorter travel distances and greater parity in competition, while remaining in the MPC for all other sports and activities.
