==Taxonomy==
The genus was [circumscribed](/source/circumscription_(taxonomy)) by Austrian mycologist [Franz Xaver Rudolf von Höhnel](/source/Franz_Xaver_Rudolf_von_H%C3%B6hnel) in 1914 with ''[Micropsalliota pseudovolvulata](/source/Micropsalliota_pseudovolvulata)'' as the [type species](/source/type_species). This species was collected in 1907 by Höhnel in the [Bogor Botanical Gardens](/source/Bogor_Botanical_Gardens) in [Bogor](/source/Bogor), [Indonesia](/source/Indonesia).<ref name="Höhnel 1914"/> The generic name refers to the similarity of the slender [fruitbodies](/source/basidiocarp) to those in ''Psalliota'' (a genus that has since been synonymized with ''[Agaricus](/source/Agaricus)'').<ref name="Zhao 2010"/> Emendations were made to the genus in 1969 by Pegler and Rayner,<ref name="Pegler 1969"/> and then in 1976 by Heinemann.<ref name="Heinemann 1976"/> [Molecular phylogenetics](/source/Molecular_phylogenetics) has shown that the genus represents a [monophyletic](/source/monophyletic) lineage in the family [Agaricaceae](/source/Agaricaceae) that is [sister](/source/sister_taxon) to the genus ''[Hymenagaricus](/source/Hymenagaricus)''.<ref name="Zhao 2010"/>

''Micropsalliota'' fruitbodies have a [ring](/source/annulus_(mycology)) on the [stipe](/source/stipe_(mycology)), free [gill](/source/lamella_(mycology)) attachment, and brown [spores](/source/basidiospore). ''Micropsalliota'' is distinguished from similar genera with dark [spore print](/source/spore_print)s by its small- to medium-sized fruit bodies, [ellipsoid](/source/ellipsoid) to cymbiform (boat-shaped) basidiospores with an apical thickening in the [endosporium](/source/endospore), [cheilocystidia](/source/cystidia) that are often capitate (ending in a distinct compact head) or nearly so, and [pileipellis](/source/pileipellis) hyphae encrusted with a [pigment](/source/biological_pigment) that turns olive to green after application of [NH<sub>4</sub>OH](/source/Chemical_tests_in_mushroom_identification).<ref name="Zhao 2010"/>
