***Microbrachis*** is an extinct genus of [microsaurian](/source/Microsauria) [tetrapod](/source/Tetrapod) from the [Carboniferous](/source/Carboniferous) Kladno Formation of the [Czech Republic](/source/Czech_Republic).

## Description

*Microbrachis* was an elongated, [salamander](/source/Salamander)-like creature, about 15 centimetres (6 in) long, with over 40 [vertebrae](/source/Vertebra) instead of the average 15–26 in its living relatives. It had minute limbs, and probably swam using [fish](/source/Fish)-like lateral body movements. *Microbrachis* probably fed on fresh water [plankton](/source/Plankton) such as [shrimp](/source/Shrimp). *Microbrachis* was [pedomorphic](/source/Pedomorphosis), retaining its [larval](/source/Larva) [gills](/source/Gill) in adulthood. Similar traits are found in the extant [axolotl](/source/Axolotl).[1]
