# Mickey Edelstein

**Mickey Edelstein** (Hebrew: מיקי אדלשטיין; born May 1966) is a [major-general](/source/Major-general) in the [Israeli Defense Forces](/source/Israeli_Defense_Forces), and the IDF's [military attaché](/source/Military_attach%C3%A9) in the United States.

## Biography

Michael (Mickey) Edelstein was born in [Omer](/source/Omer,_Israel). He was drafted into the IDF in 1986 and volunteered to the [Israeli Air Force](/source/Israeli_Air_Force) special forces unit [Shaldag](/source/Shaldag_Unit). He served as a soldier and a [squad leader](/source/Squad_leader).

## Military career

Edelstein became an [infantry](/source/Infantry) officer after completing [Officer Candidate School](/source/Officer_Candidate_School) and return to the unit as a [platoon leader](/source/Platoon_leader). Later he served as a [company commander](/source/Company_commander) in the unit and in [Givati Brigade](/source/Givati_Brigade). He was the commander of [Duvdevan Unit](/source/Duvdevan_Unit), an elite [special forces](/source/Special_forces) unit and later led 202 "Tsefa" (Viper) [paratroop battalion](/source/Paratroopers_Brigade) during the [Second Intifada](/source/Second_Intifada).[1] Afterwards he commanded the [Nahal Brigade](/source/Nahal_Brigade) May 2006 to May 2008, including during the Second Lebanon War, and served as head of the [Paratroopers and Infantry Corps](/source/Infantry_Corps_(Israel)).[2]

He was appointed Commander of the [Gaza Division](/source/Gaza_Division) in November 2012, responsible for Israel's border with Gaza, replacing General [Yossi Bachar](/source/Yossi_Bachar).[2][3] He was the primary commander of the Israeli army in the [Gaza Strip](/source/Gaza_Strip) during the [2014 Israel–Gaza conflict](/source/2014_Israel%E2%80%93Gaza_conflict).[4] In 2016 he was promoted to the rank of [aluf](/source/Aluf) (Major general) and was appointed as the IDF's [military attaché](/source/Military_attach%C3%A9) in the United States.
