'''Michael Struwe''' (born 6 October 1955 in [Wuppertal](/source/Wuppertal)) is a German mathematician who specializes in [calculus of variations](/source/calculus_of_variations) and [nonlinear partial differential equation](/source/nonlinear_partial_differential_equation)s. He won the 2012 [Cantor medal](/source/Cantor_medal) from the [Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung](/source/Deutsche_Mathematiker-Vereinigung) for "outstanding achievements in the field of geometric analysis, calculus of variations and nonlinear partial differential equations".<ref name=ems>{{cite web|title=Cantor medal for Michael Struwe, von Kaven-prize for Eva Viehmann |url=http://www.euro-math-soc.eu/node/2938 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20131211121744/http://www.euro-math-soc.eu/node/2938 |url-status=dead |archive-date=11 December 2013 |work=European Mathematical Society |accessdate=11 December 2013 |year=2012 }}</ref>

He studied mathematics at the [University of Bonn](/source/University_of_Bonn), gaining his PhD in 1980 with the title ''Infinitely Many Solutions for Superlinear, Anticoercive Elliptic Boundary Value Problems without Oddness''.<ref>{{cite web|title=Michael Struwe|url=http://genealogy.math.uni-bielefeld.de/id.php?id=54337|work=Mathematical Genealogy Project|accessdate=10 December 2013}}</ref> He took research positions in Paris and at [ETH Zürich](/source/ETH_Z%C3%BCrich) before gaining his [habilitation](/source/habilitation) in Bonn in 1984. Since 1986, he has been working at ETH Zürich, initially as an assistant professor, becoming a full professor in 1993.<ref name=ems/> His specialisms included nonlinear partial differential equations and calculus of variations.

He is joint editor of the journals ''Calculus of Variations'', ''[Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici](/source/Commentarii_Mathematici_Helvetici)'', ''International Mathematical Research Notices'' and ''Mathematische Zeitschrift''.

His publications include the book ''Variational methods (Applications to nonlinear PDE and Hamiltonian systems)'' (Springer-Verlag, 1990), which was praised by [Jürgen Jost](/source/J%C3%BCrgen_Jost) as "very useful" with an "impressive range of often difficult examples".<ref name=jost>{{cite journal|last=Jost|first=Jürgen|title=Variational methods (Applications to nonlinear PDE and Hamiltonian systems)|journal=Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society|date=January 1993|volume=28|series=New series|issue=1|pages=149–153|authorlink=Jürgen Jost|doi=10.1090/s0273-0979-1993-00339-2|doi-access=free}}</ref>

Struwe was awarded a [Gauss Lecture](/source/Gauss_Lectureship) by the [German Mathematical Society](/source/German_Mathematical_Society) in 2011. In 2012, Struwe was selected as one of the inaugural fellows of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society).<ref>[http://www.ams.org/profession/fellows-list List of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society], retrieved 19 January 2014.</ref>
