# Michael Stal

**Michael Stal** (born 1963 in [Munich](/source/Munich)) is a German [computer scientist](/source/Computer_scientist). He received a Ph.D. title [1] from the [University of Groningen](/source/University_of_Groningen) which appointed him an honorary professorship for [software engineering](/source/Software_engineering) in 2010.[2] Stal is currently working for the corporate technology department of [Siemens AG](/source/Siemens_AG) and as a professor at [University of Groningen](/source/University_of_Groningen). He is editor-in-chief of the [Java programming language](/source/Java_programming_language) magazine *[JavaSPEKTRUM](/source/JavaSPEKTRUM)*.[3]

Stal co-authored the book series *Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture*.

Volume 1 *”A System of Patterns”* book introduced [Architecture Patterns](/source/Architecture_Pattern), classified different categories of [Design Patterns](/source/Design_Pattern), and a method how to use [Pattern Systems](/source/Pattern_System).

Volume 2 addresses *“Patterns for Concurrent and Distributed Objects”*.

In addition to [software architecture](/source/Software_architecture), his research fields comprise [distributed computing](/source/Distributed_computing) [middleware](/source/Middleware), [systems integration](/source/Systems_integration), [programming languages](/source/Programming_language), and [programming paradigms](/source/Programming_paradigm). Stal has been member of the [Object Management Group](/source/Object_Management_Group) and participated in the standardization of [C++](/source/C%2B%2B).
