'''George Michael Singleton''' [CBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) [MC](/source/Military_Cross) (12 May 1913{{spaced ndash}}11 December 2002) was an English [first-class cricket](/source/first-class_cricket)er who played in three matches, appearing once for [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) and twice for [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club). He took five wickets with his left-arm spin and scored 34 runs in his five innings. He later played for the [Free Foresters](/source/Free_Foresters) and [I Zingari](/source/I_Zingari).

Singleton was born in [Repton](/source/Repton), [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire), where his father was a schoolmaster.  In 1916, his father became headmaster of [The Elms School](/source/The_Elms_School%2C_Colwall) in [Colwall](/source/Colwall).  Michael was the eldest of four brothers.  [Sandy Singleton](/source/Sandy_Singleton) was a county cricketer who became captain of Oxford and Worcestershire. John became a farmer in Scotland, and [Tim Singleton](/source/Tim_Singleton) became President of the [Law Society](/source/Law_Society), and was knighted.

He was educated at [Uppingham](/source/Uppingham_School) and [Pembroke College, Cambridge](/source/Pembroke_College%2C_Cambridge), and became a teacher at [West Down School](/source/West_Down_School) near [Winchester](/source/Winchester), before rejoining his father as a teacher at The Elms.

In 1939, he joined the army and formed a company of the [Hereford Light Infantry](/source/Hereford_Light_Infantry).<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=34630|page=3648|date=30 May 1939}}</ref> He was seconded to the [King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry](/source/King's_Own_Yorkshire_Light_Infantry), landing in France shortly after [D-Day](/source/D-Day), where he won the MC.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=37442|page=638|date=22 January 1946|supp=y}}</ref> He was offered the opportunity to join the regular army in 1946, but returned to The Elms, where he succeeded his father as headmaster in 1948, remaining headmaster for 25 years, until 1973.  He was also a local [magistrate](/source/magistrate), [High Sheriff](/source/High_Sheriff) of [Hereford and Worcester](/source/Hereford_and_Worcester), and a [Deputy Lieutenant](/source/Deputy_Lieutenant).

He married Diana Philpot in 1939, and they had five children.  He died in [Malvern](/source/Malvern%2C_Worcestershire) at the age of 89.
