Prior to elective office, Peifer attended Wallenpaupack Area High School.<ref name=bio /> He attended [Rider College](/source/Rider_College) on a baseball scholarship and earned a degree in accounting.<ref name=bio>{{cite web |url=http://reppeifer.com/bio.aspx |access-date=2009-01-11 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110920025338/http://reppeifer.com/bio.aspx |archive-date=20 September 2011 |title=Biography |website=State Representative Mike Peifer |url-status=live }}</ref> Peifer worked for [Price Waterhouse LLP](/source/PricewaterhouseCoopers), eventually rising to the level of a senior tax consultant as a [Certified Public Accountant](/source/Certified_Public_Accountant). In 1995, Peifer opened his own accounting and tax firm in his hometown of [Greentown, Pennsylvania](/source/Pike_County%2C_Pennsylvania).<ref name=bio /> Peifer served as [Pike County](/source/Pike_County%2C_Pennsylvania) treasurer from 1999 through 2006.<ref name=votesmart>{{cite web | title = Representative Michael T. As a state representative, served on the board of the [Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency](/source/Pennsylvania_Higher_Education_Assistance_Agency) from 2011 through 2022, including as the board's chair in 2017-2020 and 2022.
