# Michael Murphy (bishop)

Irish Catholic bishop

**Michael Murphy** (b. [Kilmichael, County Cork](/source/Kilmichael%2C_County_Cork) 18 February 1924; d. [Cork](/source/Cork_(city)) 7 October 1996) was an [Irish](/source/Irish_people) [Catholic](/source/Catholic) [bishop](/source/Bishop) in the last quarter of the 20th Century.[1]

Before becoming a priest Murphy was a member of the team that won the [1941 All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship](/source/1941_All-Ireland_Minor_Hurling_Championship).[2] Murphy was ordained priest on 19 June 1949.[3] He served in [Peru](/source/Peru) then as head teacher of [St Finbarr's College, Farranferris](/source/St_Finbarr's_College%2C_Farranferris).[4] He was appointed [Coadjutor Bishop](/source/Coadjutor_Bishop) [of Cork and Ross](/source/Bishop_of_Cork_and_Ross) on 1 April 1976 and was consecrated its diocesan on 23 August 1980. He died in post sixteen years later.[5]
