Kesselring played high school hockey for the [New Hampton School](/source/New_Hampton_School) within the [New England Preparatory School Athletic Council](/source/New_England_Preparatory_School_Athletic_Council) before spending the conclusion of the [2017–18 season](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_USHL_season) with the [Des Moines Buccaneers](/source/Des_Moines_Buccaneers) of the [United States Hockey League](/source/United_States_Hockey_League) (USHL). In his first year of eligibility, with standout physical attributes and strong hockey sense, Kesselring was selected by the [Edmonton Oilers](/source/Edmonton_Oilers) of the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL) in the sixth round, 164th overall, of the [2018 NHL entry draft](/source/2018_NHL_entry_draft).<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/dev-camp-kesselring-was-at-his-lake-house-when-drafted-by-oilers/c-299276192 | title = Dev Camp: Kesselring was at his lake house when drafted by Oilers | publisher = [Edmonton Oilers](/source/Edmonton_Oilers) | date = June 26, 2018 | access-date = June 26, 2018}}</ref>

In his only full season in the USHL in [2018–19](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_USHL_season), Kesselring split the season between the Buccaneers and the [Fargo Force](/source/Fargo_Force) before committing to a collegiate career with [Northeastern University](/source/Northeastern_University) of the [Hockey East](/source/Hockey_East).

During his sophomore season in the NCAA, Kesselring opted to conclude his collegiate career and turn professional for the remainder of the [2020–21 season](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_AHL_season), signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on March 22, 2021.<ref>{{cite web| url =https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/release-oilers-sign-kesselring-to-entry-level-contract/c-322765990 | title = Oilers sign Michael Kesselring to entry-level contract | publisher = [Edmonton Oilers](/source/Edmonton_Oilers) | date = March 22, 2021 | access-date = March 22, 2021}}</ref> Appearing with their [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL) affiliate, the [Bakersfield Condors](/source/Bakersfield_Condors), on an amateur tryout basis, Kesselring collected three points through 21 regular season games and making six post-season appearances.
